Occupation overview

The carpenter raises the frame — and everything that holds it up.

From load-bearing timber structures and roof frameworks to formwork for reinforced concrete and scaffolding for work at height — the carpenter builds the structure that every other trade depends on.

  • Manual & mechanized timber processing. Cutting, chiseling, drilling, hollowing and planing — by hand and on specialised machinery.
  • Roof frameworks & load-bearing structures. Ridges, purlins, posts, rafters and auxiliary roof elements, built to engineered specification.
  • Formwork & scaffolding. Assembly and dismantling of formwork for concrete elements, prefabricated panels, and scaffolding systems for working at height.
  • Stairs, panel buildings & energy efficiency. Timber staircases with handrails and balustrades, panel buildings, and energy-efficiency detailing throughout.
Special requirements. Physical stamina, ability to work at heights, and tolerance for repetitive tasks in a structured construction environment. A medical fitness certificate is required before training begins.
